Individuation, in Jungian psychology, is the process whereby an individual realizes a state of spiritual and psychological wholeness. Through this process, that, which was previously broken and fragmented, is restored and synthesized so that a whole and unique individual emerges. An individual who fully accepts, and is one with, him or herself. An individual who lives authentically and embraces his or her destiny. It is a movement away from being a pawn in the hands of fate, to consciously collaborating in the realization of your unique destiny.

The Magnum Opus online programme in Applied Jungian Psychology is designed to take the student through these four stages of transmutation and transformation. The trajectory and goal of this process is clear: to produce the Philosopher’s Stone. In the terms of Jungian psychology this is individuation. To better describe and realise this goal, we include two additional and essential elements in our stated objective of individuation. Together these three elements and cardinal points form the  psychological triptych that informs our work and stated aims of the Magnum Opus Programme:  consciousness, meaning and individuation.

Magnum Opus is The Centre for Applied Jungian Studies' signature course spanning 15 months. This is made up of four 12-week blocks of study with a month’s break between each stage. This online, in-depth, course includes all learning materials, live webinars, facilitated forums, and one-on-one mentoring.

What is The Magnum Opus?

The Great Work (in Latin: Magnum Opus) refers, in the alchemical and Hermetic tradition, to the process of transmutation of the primal material (prima materia) into the philosopher’s stone (lapis philosophorum). The philosopher stone is the most refined and valuable substance which through the alchemical process emerges from the crudest and most worthless. In traditional alchemy, this was the transmutation of lead into gold. Later, in the Gnostic tradition, this was interpreted not as the transmutation of metal, but of the soul or psyche of the alchemist himself.

How does this translate into psychology?

Carl Gustav Jung (1875 – 1961), the founder of analytical psychology, usually referred to as “Jungian psychology”, saw in Gnostic alchemy a precedent to the process of individuation, as encountered in his own clinical practice. This was a breakthrough for Jung and offered a vast amount of data supporting his theory of the collective unconscious; more specifically, that psychic transformation follows an archetypal and universal process.  This transformative process happens through the integration of the conscious and unconscious aspects of the subject’s psychology.  Jung describes this process as having four stages.

The Four Stages

The four stages of the Magnum Opus programme mirror the four stages of alchemical transmutation and of psychological transformation. They they are Nigredo, Albedo, Citrinitas and Rubedo.  In psychological terms Jung described these as: Confession, Illumination, Education and Transformation. Each stage is twelve weeks in duration and focuses on the key Jungian psychodynamic concepts related to that stage.

THE FOUR STAGES

01 NIGREDO
Focuses on understanding your unconscious drives and motivations.
Starts 26 January 2026

02
ALBEDO
Focuses on the development of communication between the conscious and unconscious aspects of the psyche. This stage builds relationship to the Self.
Starts in 25 May, 2026.

03
CITRINITAS
Focuses on exploring relationship dynamics with the world, others and intimate partners.

Nigredo

Nigredo, the stage of confession or catharsis, is the first stage in the Magnum Opus. Nigredo focuses on “Shadow work”, a term in Jungian Psychology which is the process of uncovering, integrating and working with the unconscious aspects of self.

This twelve week course explores the following psychodynamic concepts and their application in your psychology. The topics explored are:

01 ARCHETYPES PARTS 1 & 2

Exploring the drives and motivations behind your actions.

02 COMPLEXES PARTS 1 & 2
Understanding the various parts of you and how they interrelate and affect behaviors.

03 PROJECTION
Key action in psyche that determines your understanding and experience of yourself.

04 SHADOW
Working with and resolving inner conflict and resistance.

Understanding archetypal dynamics and influences on our psyches, coming to terms with the complexes that live within us and the projections that these complexes produce is essential to the integration of the shadow.

Albedo

Albedo focuses on the development of communication between the unconscious and conscious aspects of the psyche.  This stage builds relationship to the Self. As individuation is the bringing together of both conscious and unconscious perspectives, this stage is imperative in the actualization of this dialogue. This is the stage or illumination or elucidation.

The concepts covered in this stage are:

01 DIALOGUE WITH THE UNCONSCIOUS PSYCHE

Illumination and interpretation of unconscious content.

02 CONSCIOUSNESS & EGO
The role of the ego in consciousness and individuation.

03 SYMBOLS
The language of the unconscious.

04 DREAMS & ACTIVE IMAGINATION
Accessing the Imaginal.

Understanding the role of consciousness and the ego in a healthy adaptation to yourself and the world, and the role this plays in exploring the creativity and healing power of the unconscious through dreams and symbol work.

Citrinitas

  • The Citrinitas stage in the individuation process focuses on facilitating conscious relatedness to others and the world at large. This is the stage of education.

The concepts covered in this stage are:

01 TRANSFORMATION
Jung’s four step model of transformation.

02 TRANSFERENCE
How you experience and (unconsciously) relate to others.

03 COUNTERTRANSFERENCE
How others experience and (unconsciously) relate to you.

04 THE ANIMA
The inner feeling life, the life of the soul.

05 THE ANIMUS
The outer thinking life, the life of the mind.

Anima and Animus are key concepts in Jungian psychology and relates to relatedness to self and the other, especially intimate relationships. Transference and countertransference explores your own dynamics in relatedness to the other and the unconscious communications relayed in these dynamics.

Rubedo

This is the final stage of the Magnum Opus. Rubedo focuses on personal myth and the individuation process.

The meaning and process of individuation.

02 PERSONAL MYTH

The meaning and process of individuation.

03 THE SYMBOLIC LIFE

Who is this Course for?

Magnum Opus is for the individual who has reached a stage where they feel intense reflection is required to understand their life and frustrations.

It is for those who feel the weight of the questions regarding the meaning or purpose of their life, often triggered by feelings of dissatisfaction, unhappiness, frustration and being unable to identify what the exact source or cause of these feelings.

Sometimes there is an element of dysfunction in either the relatedness to others or to themselves. Certain habits or defense mechanisms that were developed in early years are no longer working, instead hampering the ability to lead a meaningful and fulfilling life. There is a consistent lingering of feelings of melancholia, dissatisfaction  or restlessness.

Jung realised that this is the precursor to the transmutation of self. The impulse for individuation and a deeper connection to psyche or soul, a truer and more profound understanding of oneself, is archetypal and something that most people face at some or other stage in of their individuation journey. Typically, but not always in “mid-life”

How Does the Course Work?

The course is a facilitated, online programme that includes both live and pre-recorded & transcribed lectures. The programme is supported by mentors and a community on a private course  group. The group is managed by a facilitation team who are available to answer questions and provide guidance as you work through the programme. One-on-one mentoring sessions will assist you with working through the applications.

Each stage consists of six modules. Each module is explored over a two-week period. The learning material is accessible on our learning platform. The Modules includes a podcast and a transcript. You will receive one session with your mentor per Modules to explore the concepts and work through the applications per module.   The programme includes three live Zoom sessions : an introduction at the commencement of the programme; a Q&A and discussion mid-way through; and a closing session.  These sessions are recorded for later viewing as well.

The course includes a facilitated private course forum in our online learning center, where there are discussions on each topic as well as guidance on the applications by the facilitation team.

The focus of the Centre for Applied Jungian Studies is on the application of these psychodynamic concepts. It is through reflection and personal application that these ideas are made conscious and transmutation is achieved.
